The Centre is in collaboration with Universities, Governmental agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations in West Africa and beyond. CCPZ supported qualified candidates for the Master of Science, Master of Philosophy and/or Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and Certificate of Participation in Human-Animal Disease Surveillance in West Africa from 2012 to 2018 through the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Higher Education Initiative in Africa Grant to the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. All graduates on the CCPZ career track postgraduate fellowship programme were assimilated into the Society for Epizootiology in West Africa (SEWA). SEWA is responsible for active engagement of CCPZ collaborating institutions in delivery of joint surveillance and intervention services with focus on human-animal diseases in West Africa, including:

Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana https://www.knust.edu.gh/  and in Nigeria, the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria  https://www.nvri.gov.ng/ together with the Nigerian Institute for Science Laboratory Technology https://www.nislt.gov.ng/ have significantly participated in the activities of the Society for Epizootiology and Animal Health in West Africa.

WHO WE ARE

The Centre for Control and Prevention of Zoonoses (CCPZ) is an international hub for training, research and services in the surveillance of human-animal diseases in West Africa. CCPZ trains people to identify the causal agents, associated risk factors, mapping of the space and time distribution pattern of the problem, and promotes the containment of diseases at the human-animal-environment interface. CCPZ training curricula are at the levels of certificate of participation, Master of Science in Epizootiology (with specialty in spatial and spatio-temporal modeling; or serological and molecular epizootiology) and Doctor of the Philosophy. CCPZ’s mission is to train and support critical mass of highly skilled personnel in surveillance, control and prevention of emerging, endemic and neglected human-animal diseases in West Africa.
