ENHANCING ONE HEALTH INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN NIGERIA

IMPROVING ON CCPZ ZOONOSES INFORMATION SYSTEMS

In 1984, the National Zoonoses Center (Nucleus Laboratory), University of Ibadan began to develop a Zoonoses Information System for public health and preventive intervention in Nigeria useful for individuals and the authorities. The concept note was provided to the Principal Investigator, CCPZ by the Coordinator, National Zoonoses Center. A second stage of its actualization was in a Geospatial Information Infrastructure deployed at CCPZ informatics hub.

From January 2027, the CCPZ Epidemiology and Informatics Unit shall embark on an improvement in the database and decision matrix of its web-based Zoonoses Information System for supporting farmers, animal health and human health authorities in south-west Nigeria. Newly digitized records of animal clinical visits from 1977 - 2021 in the south-west geopolitical region of Nigeria will be integrated into its decision making algorithim to achieve more effective control and prevention of diseases at the human-animal-crop-environment interface.

The European Union URBANE project had built on local knowledge in West Africa with new technologies and best practices that worked in European regions for intensified, market-oriented farming systems and food production. CCPZ's knowledge and experiences about the Nigerian One Health system and tools was used to develop a model Zoonoses Information System in 2025 on the URBANE Nigeria Case Study deliverables. Our Center will further improve on the 2025 model through an incubation hub at the University of Ibadan.
